Bull Sazerac
Bulleit Rye • Rhum Barbancourt State Reserve Aged 15 Years • Absente Refined • Bitters
Rumored to be the first American cocktail, the Bull Sazerac gained popularity in the mid-1800s at the Sazerac Coffee House in the French Quarter of New Orleans.
The Creole apothecary Antoine Peychaud treated his friends to brandy toddies of his own recipe, including his “Peychaud’s Bitters” and imported French Sazerac-de-Forge et Fils cognac, for which the drink is named. The drink became immensely popular and the first “branded” cocktail; but, in 1873, the recipe was altered to replace the French brandy with American rye whiskey due to the phylloxera epidemic that destroyed European vineyards.
