Meet Len and Dani Johnson - Founders of Better Than Sex

Key West, Florida

The concept began in 2003 with Len exclaiming to his then new wife “I want dessert.” Four hours later, after hearing “Where’s my dessert?” a million times, Dani brought out a fully decorated 2 layer Oreo Cream Cake. Len pronounced, “Wow, if you can do this what else can you do?” Never letting go of a challenge, Dani took him up on the offer and began teaching herself and baking her little heart out at home (after all she had her own tasting panel), recording all of her recipes, saving the receipts, and taking photos of everything. They had no plan of a dessert restaurant during those first years, but something inside said Dani should be doing this and keeping all these recipes. By 2006 Len and Dani had conceptualized a dessert concept and threw a Valentine’s day party at their house. That night they rolled out, unknown to their guests, a proposed opening day menu. Len and Dani wanted unbiased reactions and didn’t tell anyone what was going to happen that night. Overwhelmingly those at that party responded “You should do this for a living.” It was go time.

For our New Year Resolution in 2008, Len and Dani made a written agreement to themselves. This became a personal life goals list that each of them committed to and signed on January 16th, 2008. Number seven of that agreement was to open their own restaurant by October of 2008. They not only followed through on that resolution, but exceeded it, by opening the original location on May 20th, 2008 in Key West Florida. (411 Petronia Street-Currently Bliss Restaurant)

The first year or so was very challenging. It took a bit of time to catch on and Key West had four hurricane evacuations during that first year. There were a few times where they were down to just a few thousand dollars in the business account wondering what would happen if it dipped a little lower. Len and Dani didn’t have a back-up plan and stayed true to the course, and with the support of the amazing locals of Key West, built a business that was now standing room only. After four years it was time to move to a larger space where we are located today.

Since then Better Than Sex has grown to a second company location in Orlando in 2015 and 4 franchises located in Savannah, Plano, Los Angeles, and Greenville South Carolina. All of this from a little desire, lots of hard work, a love for serving, and a 2 layer Oreo Cream Cake
